ALBANY, N.Y. — Some T-Mobile customers in New York State may be eligible for reimbursements after the State Attorney General’s Office secured more than $38 million over the company’s price hikes.
The AG’s Office says T-Mobile backtracked on a 2017 promise to never raise the price for certain cellular plans for 4G customers. According to the office, T-Mobile began raising the price of these plans by about $5 per phone line in 2024.
After the AG Office’s investigation, T-Mobile agreed to give impacted customers a chance to get reimbursed and agreed to freeze price hikes under its Price Guarantee Plan. According to the office:
- Consumers on 4G phones can either cancel their T-Mobile plan and receive a refund for their last month’s payment plus a $25 gift card, or stay with T-Mobile and receive a new $250 5G phone for free or a $150 credit toward a more expensive model.
- If consumers choose to stay with T-Mobile, the company will not raise its phone plan costs until at least 2029. For all other affected consumers, including those who have upgraded to 5G, T-Mobile must provide the opportunity to cancel their plans and receive their last month’s payment back or continue with T-Mobile with the same guarantee that plans stay at the same price until 2029.
- The reimbursement options are expected to provide more than $38 million to affected consumers. You can learn more here.
The office says T-Mobile must also abide by all current and future price guarantees and clearly disclose any exemptions. In addition, T-Mobile has agreed to pay $98,000 to New York State.
