The Rochester Police Department’s Special Victims Unit is investigating the death of the 2-year-old. News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke to Yahniya Gillespie, whose mother had custody of the boy for his first nine months.

Gillespie said the boy’s name was Isaiah. Blue and white balloons were put up at the corner of LaGrange Avenue and Ridgeway Avenue in his honor.

Gillespie said Isaiah was loved by anyone who met him. She said she wanted to make sure Isaiah gets the type of tribute he deserves.

“We’re out here because we want to celebrate. I think that it’s important to celebrate anybody’s death, especially if it was in a drastic way or just an unexpected way,” Gillespie said. “We want to celebrate that. We want to give flowers and balloons to those who have. And I feel like he deserves all the balloons. I feel like he deserves all the support. I don’t think that any 2-year-old passing away is okay. I don’t think that a 2-year-old should be able to have a short life.”
