IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — The Soap Box Derby hosted its local championship races on Saturday in Irondequoit.
One car at the derby had an American flag theme with an eagle on it. The other cars were lined up next to each other before the race.
Kids placed their hands on their hearts for the Pledge of Allegiance and then they got ready to start. Cars were placed on the ramps and then they were off.

The director of the Soap Box Derby said there were 37 participants on Saturday.
“I can’t believe everybody still supports this. If you look around, there’s volunteers. These are people whose kids raced, 20 or 30 years ago. They’re still out here helping,” said Mark Scuderi, New York State Regional Director for the All-American Soap Box Derby.

Later in the day, the Irondequoit Rotary Club rededicated a restored memorial honoring Private First Class William P. Spain — the 1935 local Soap Box Derby champion who was killed in action during World War II.
