Good Question: Why has nothing moved in to the vacant pavilion at Ontario Beach Park?

Why hasn’t anything gone in the vacant pavilion at Ontario Beach Park?

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A pavilion at Ontario Beach Park has sat vacant for more than six years, prompting questions from viewers about why nothing has moved in.

The pavilion used to be a concession stand selling snacks and drinks to beachgoers along Lake Ontario but has been shuttered since before the COVID pandemic.

Viewer Sean asked why the concession stands at Charlotte Beach weren’t being used. He noted that three years ago he asked the same question and was told plans were in the works.

“It’s now 3 years later and the building is still closed up and not in use. When will the city follow through with what they said back in 2023 and 2024?” Sean said.

In 2023, 3,900 people responded to a survey from Monroe County. 74% percent said they’d like to see another food stand at the location.

In 2024, the county said it had hired an engineering firm to assess the building. Officials said it would either be repaired or replaced in 2025.

This summer, News10NBC asked the county why it’s still not open. The county said it does not have a vendor to operate the stand and the building still needs repairs.

The pavilion will not be open for food and drinks this summer. However, there are dozens of restaurants around the area, including Abbott’s Frozen Custard just a short walk from the beach.
