Rochester PAB Alliance expands coalition to support statewide legislative advocacy

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester’s Police Accountability Board Alliance is expanding its coalition to support statewide legislative advocacy for police accountability.

The alliance held a press conference Thursday morning to discuss its coalition-building efforts. The alliance is working with organizations and community members across Rochester to develop legislative priorities and advocate for reforms that strengthen police accountability and transparency.

Officials say recent court decisions have made state legislation necessary to address questions about civilian oversight.

“We talk about independence as the number one pillar of the police accountability board — independence from political actors, that becomes really difficult when you consider the police accountability board as an agency taking the lead in that lobbying fight against those same legislators. That’s where we step in,” said Jonathan Khoury from the PAB.

Organizers say they hope a united statewide effort will help turn local accountability concerns into legislative action.
