Two charged with burglary after being accused of stealing calves from Genesee County farm

OAKFIELD, N.Y. — Two people from Lockport are facing charges after Genesee County Sheriff’s deputies say they stole 17 calves from an open barn.

Torrence and Kerisa Schmitt are charged with burglary, grand larceny, tampering with evidence, and falsifying business records.

On May 24, deputies say they got a report of a burglary at Lamb Farms in the Town of Oakfield. The responding deputy found that 17 calves were taken overnight from an open barn.

Torrence and Kerisa Schmitt were found in Jamestown, N.Y. and arrested on warrants on June 3.

Deputies say it is believed the two took the identification tags off the calves to try and hid the fact they took the calves. They also say the value of the stolen calves was over $41,000.

The two were released under the supervision of Genesee Justice and are scheduled to reappear in Genesee County Court at a later time.
