Deputies: West Bloomfield fire chief charged with DWI

WEST BLOOMFIELD, N.Y. — Ontario County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested the West Bloomfield fire chief after they say he drove while intoxicated.

Deputies say just before 8 p.m. Thursday, they responded to State Route 5 and 20 in the Town of West Bloomfield for a rollover crash.

While investigating, deputies say they learned Chief Ronald Smith had responded to the crash in his personal SUV possibly intoxicated. After conducting a roadside investigation, deputies arrested Smith for DWI and consumption of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Smith was issued citations and will appear in West Bloomfield Town Court at a later date to answer to his charges.

“Its unfortunate, but it doesn’t and isn’t reflective of the vast majority of first responders who come out to help people in their communities everyday,” said Ontario County Sheriff David Circencione.

Circencione said all the people from the fire departments who responded to the crash Thursday night are volunteer. He says they train and respond on their own time, and it is a big commitment.

According to Circencione, Smith was cooperative during the investigation and with deputies.
