Rochester woman attacked by dog at Park Square Apartments leaves her afraid to return home

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A woman who was attacked by her next-door neighbor’s dog at Park Square Apartments downtown is demanding changes at her apartment complex.

Recalling the attack

Robin Williams, who has lived at Park Square Apartments for eight years, said she was terrified during the attack. “I felt terrified. I didn’t know if I was going to lose my arm,” Williams said.

Williams, 65, said she is now afraid to return home after her next door neighbor’s pitbull attacked her while she was on her scooter.

“I’m so scared of that dog, I was riding and hit the door and it stopped my scooter, so my scooter wouldn’t work. And so I’m trapped right there in-between my door, and I’m trying to push my scooter with my leg to get in there, to get away from his dog, you know, continuing to bite me. But it wouldn’t move,” Williams said.

Restrictions on dogs

Williams said dogs are supposed to be registered with the apartment office. “You have to have your dog, registered with the office. All dogs,” Williams said.

Conifer Realty, the owner of Park Square Apartments, said the dog’s owner did not have permission to keep the dog there and that animal services removed the dog. The company also said it did not know about the dog’s existence, but Williams disagreed.

“People came checking out everybody’s apartment. They knocked on that door and I heard it. That dog, the same one that bit me, growl like a wolf,” Williams said.

Looking to move

Williams said she now wants to move to a handicapped accessible apartment. She feels she could have escaped from the dog sooner if she was able to get through her door easier.

“[Handicap apartment] doors are wider. And I would have been able to swoop in there, instead of me trying to swoop in and hit the door, because the door so narrow. The handicapped doors are wider, so I could have easily got in there before this dog got ahold of my arm,” Williams said.

A police report was filed the night of the attack. News10NBC reached out to Rochester police for more information but has not heard back.

Williams adds that she’s looking to press charges.

Statement

Conifer Realty gave a statement about the attack:

“We take this incident very seriously. The safety of everyone who lives at Park Square is our top priority.

The resident who owned the dog did not have permission to keep it at the community, and management did not know it was there. Local police responded to the community that night, and we have fully cooperated with them. Once we learned of the incident, our team moved quickly. We issued a lease violation to the dog’s owner and required the dog to be removed. When it wasn’t removed by the deadline, Animal Control was called, and they have since taken the dog off the property.

We’ve been in contact with the injured resident’s family since the incident and remain available to support her. We’ll keep enforcing our pet policies to help keep the community safe.”
