ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Gas prices in Rochester and across the nation have fallen slightly over the past week, but remain high with the Strait of Hormuz still closed.
However, U.S. officials are hoping for some relief soon. The U.S. and Iran have reached a deal aiming to end the war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of the world’s oil supply passes. There are plans to sign the deal on Friday in Switzerland. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan says gas prices might not drop right away after the strait opens, but rather slowly decrease.
Rochester’s average gas price reached around $4.44 per gallon on Monday, according to AAA’s latest report. That’s about six cents lower than a week ago and 15 cents lower than a month ago.
Rochester’s average remains higher than the national average, which reached about $4.06 per gallon on Monday. The national average has dropped by 10 cents from a week ago and 46 cents from a month ago. Rochester’s average is also higher than the New York State average, which is around $4.36 per gallon.
The cheapest gas in the Rochester area on Monday is $3.95 per gallon at the Costco on North Clinton Avenue, according to GasBuddy. You can find the lowest price in your area through GasBuddy’s website. Overall, Rochester has seen the sharpest spike in gas prices since March of 2022, during the pandemic era.
How to find the cheapest gas price
In addition to checking GasBuddy’s fuel finder, News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry has some tips to improve fuel efficiency or find the lowest price:
- Keep your gas tank at least half full. This way, you have time to choose the cheapest gas station instead of what’s closest.
- Drive smoothly, as hard braking and acceleration can reduce fuel economy.
- Buy top-tier gas for better engine performance and fuel efficiency.
- Regularly check tire pressure, as low pressure can affect fuel efficiency.
- Use gas apps to find the cheapest gas nearby.
