RFD: Person rescued from island near Pont de Rennes bridge

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Fire Department says three of its firefighters were thrown into High Falls while trying to rescue a person stranded on a nearby island below the falls over the weekend.

According to RFD, a person was stranded on an island near the Pont de Rennes bridge on Sunday evening. RFD’s Swift Water Rescue Team, Water Rescue 1, and rope rescue and downstream safety units were requested to the scene.

Firefighters prepared for a technical rescue and deployed a rescue craft into the water. RFD says due to the extremely strong current and hazardous river conditions, the firefighters weren’t able to safely cross the river and were thrown from the craft into the water.

One of them needed assistance back to shore, but RFD says all of them were safely returned to shore with no injuries. RFD requested help from the U.S. Coast Guard as they say conditions worsened.

A Coast Guard rescue helicopter was able to rescue the stranded person. RFD says the person had no reported injuries, and no members of RFD had any reported injuries either.
