MONROE COUNTY, N.Y. — The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office celebrated the inaugural graduation of its SHIELD program.
The program is a paid leadership and life skills academy for high school juniors and seniors. Nine students graduated from the program.
Over the course of the program, they had to take part in leadership activities, community service projects and team building events.
“The hope is to one day, as soon as they turn 18, provide them with a job, or if not at the sheriff’s office, to any leadership career that they choose,” said Torrance Jones, sheriff’s community affairs executive.
The Sheriff’s Office said the SHIELD program began as a vision to help lift young people out of poverty and give them the tools for lasting success.
