First Alert Weather: Tracking a hint of winter to start the weekend, then plenty of sun

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Say so long to the milder October air, at least for a few days. A series of cold fronts passing through will drop our temperatures into the upper 30s to near 40 degrees by Saturday morning. This will be cold enough for some rain showers to mix with some wet snow showers, especially in the higher elevations of the Finger Lakes. Place like Bristol Mountain may see a light coating of white Saturday morning. Outside of that, it’ll be fleeting, and plenty of sunshine will make a return by the afternoon. It’ll remain quite cool, though, with temperatures holding in the mid 40s through the day.

High pressure building in will keep our sky clear, and our air chilly Saturday night. We have a freeze watch for Monroe, Orleans, Wayne and Genesee Counties Sunday morning. The growing season has already come to an end for the rest of our area, which is why there are no freeze watches elsewhere. Everybody will dip into 30s away from Lake Ontario. Bottom line: it will likely be cold enough to damage most vegetation Sunday morning, so if you want to keep any flowers growing, bring them in! Despite the cold start, we’ll warm back to near 60 by the afternoon under full sunshine.

We’ll see a very quiet weather pattern emerging next week. A blocking pattern will be taking shape, with a pair lows on the southwest and southeast coast. Meanwhile, we’ll be under the influence of surface high pressure. This pattern will become somewhat “stuck,” meaning very little change. That means a stretch of sunny, dry and mild weather for most of next week.
