About 150 people turned out in Henrietta to help Rochester homeless veterans

HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Operation Caring Hearts held a euchre tournament on Saturday to raise money for homeless people and veterans.

About 150 people came to play cards and win prizes, Operation Caring Hearts said. The group also raised money with a raffle, giving away spa and restaurant packages, gift baskets and a pair of cleats signed by Christian Benford with the Bills as the grand prize.

Rebecca Mearns, who runs Operation Caring Hearts, said the homeless veteran problem is growing in Rochester. She said as rent is going up, more and more vets and their families are forced to the streets.

Mearns also said seeing all the support on Saturday meant a lot.

“If I run into a homeless veteran, I basically ask them, you know, would you like housing? Some of them need rehab. I basically, refer them to a rehab, get them the help, get them detox, or I get them housing and get them off the street. I’ve gotten 39 off the street in 20 months,” Mearns said.

She encourages people not to judge the homeless until they know their story.

Operation Caring Hearts will be raising money again at its Fall Fest on Thursday and is always welcoming volunteers.
