Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra performs with local students at Side by Side concert

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Students from the City of Rochester’s ROCmusic program performed side-by-side with members of the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra during the annual Side by Side concert.

The concert kicked off at 7 p.m. at the Edgerton R-Center on Backus Street. City leaders said the concert gives local children hands-on music education and the chance to perform alongside world-class musicians.

“Music brings people together from all different backgrounds, all different areas. It’s very exciting this year that we have students coming out from Roberts, coming from those neighborhoods and singing alongside our students from the city,” said Rachel Mills, executive and artistic director of ROCmusic. “And then to be able to perform with professional musicians, they’re surrounded by another level of musicality and that’s going to inspire them and bring out the best in them even more.”

ROCmusic was founded around 2013. The annual Side by Side performances began shortly after, bringing city students onstage with RPO musicians every year since.
