Video captures flash of light before loud boom in Webster, mystery of unexplained explosions continue

WEBSTER, N.Y. — News10NBC is investigating a series of mysterious explosion sounds in Webster, with a new video capturing a flash of light just before the boom.

The newest video shared with News10NBC was captured on August 1st on a doorbell camera at the corner of Lake Road and Bay Road, near Lake Ontario. Take a look at the video we’ve received so far:

“When it first happens, my wife and I were talking in the living room, it sounded to me like someone’s propane tank exploded,” said Bryan Hensel, who captured the explosion sound and flash of light on his camera.

News10NBC Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean asked Hensel what he thought the sound and light could be.

Berkeley Brean, News10NBC: “What do you think that is?”
Bryan Hensel: “I was hoping you would tell me. I haven’t the slightest clue. It didn’t sound like lightning. It didn’t sound like fireworks. It was significant.”

This investigation started when Joell Calcagno shared the explosions she recorded at her home in Webster in October and November.

Berkeley Brean: “What do you think that is?”
Joell Calcagno: “It sounds like something exploding.”

The story has garnered 116,000 views on YouTube from across the country, with neighbors sharing unexplained flashes and sounds in their skies. A similar incident was reported in Tampa.

News10NBC First Alert Meteorologist Rich Caniglia checked the forecast from August 1, the date of Hensel’s video. Data recorded at the Rochester airport showed no storms, but there was a notation for thunder.

Rich Caniglia, News10NBC First Alert Meteorologist: “If you had lightning in Webster, there’s a chance you could hear it at the Rochester airport.”

However, there was no thunder reported for the dates of the other explosions. When Hensel’s video is frozen, it shows the light coming from the ground, not the sky.

“I didn’t hear anything later on. The neighbors all seemed fine so I just chalked it up and something I may never know what it was,” Hensel said.

The town investigated in October but did not find a source. The Coast Guard had no logs about being called to an explosion, and RG&E reported no equipment problems or outages in Webster on August 1.
