ROCHESTER – Truckloads of donations from the Big Give are being sorted and distributed to people in need.
When the truck arrives at the Open Door Mission Clothing Room, volunteers start unloading and sorting items like clothing, linens, hygiene products and toiletries.
“It’s going to be pretty busy,” Clothing Room Specialist Kamika Dash said. “So right now is just going to be coordinating. It depends on what it is that we receive from our community.”
A truckload of donations was dropped off at the clothing room at 20 Plymouth Ave. this morning. Dash said everything will be sorted and made available to people immediately.
“As soon as they come in and we go through them and put them on the floor, we distribute them in the same way we do with any donations that come in the door,” Dash said.
Then, the donation truck heads to 156 North Plymouth Ave. at Open Door Mission to drop off non-perishables. Food Services Supervisor Thomas Keeton said these non-perishables will go toward making emergency food boxes for families in need.
“This is a great help to restock our pantry and be able to give out more of these boxes to help our community better,” Keeton said.
Keeton said people give plenty of donations over the holidays, but the pantry sometimes runs dry after they’re over.
“This is not the holidays,” Keeton said. “This is in one of those lulls where we genuinely need it more than others. So this is just a great way to just restock our shelves.”
Dash said she’s appreciative of the donations.
“All of those that came out and donated early and all of those that still are planning on coming, we appreciate you so much, and God bless you,” Dash said.
Dash said Open Door Mission needs volunteers all the time, especially with all the donations from the Big Give. Volunteers in the clothing room would help put donations away and display clothing. You can register to volunteer on the Open Door Mission website.
