State announces funding for ‘Miracle on Ice’ tribute, holds meeting on feasibility of future Olympics

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. — New York State has announced $2.5 million in funding to create a permanent tribute in Lake Placid to the 1980 U.S. Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey Team, known for their “Miracle on Ice” game.

The funding will go toward Monument to a Miracle, a nonprofit organization aiming to create a life-size monument honoring the 20 team members who defeated the Soviet Union in the medal round of the Lake Placid Olympics. Two days later, the U.S. secured the gold medal by defeating Finland. The group also wants to create a statue of Eric Heiden, who won five individual gold medals in Lake Placid.

The funding announcement comes after a committee held its first meeting in New York City to determine if it’s feasible for the state to host the Winter Olympics again. As News10NBC has covered, Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office has created a committee to evaluate whether it’s a good economic decision for Lake Placid and New York City to co-host the games in 2042.

Dozens of political and business leaders are part of the committee, including Lake Placid’s Deputy Mayor, Laura Pegula, daughter of the Buffalo Bills and Buffalo Sabres owners, and members of the Olympic Regional Development Authority.

The 2026 Winter Olympics were quite a success for Rochester-area athletes, with hockey player Haley Winn and freestyle skier Chris Lillis both coming home with gold medals. You can see our Olympics coverage here.
