ROCHESTER, N.Y. — UR Medicine Home Care held its inaugural Run to Remember Hospice, a 5K to raise funding for hospice care in the Rochester area, on Sunday morning.
The race started and finished at Genesee Valley Park near the Roundhouse Shelter. The 5K and a 1.25-mile walk both started at 9:30 a.m. Organizers say the event provided people with a way to honor loved ones who have received end-of-life care. The event included memorial signs honoring loved ones near the finish line, along with event shirts that had fingerprints of kids.

“We wanted to have an event where family and friends can come together and honor and celebrate a loved one that’s passed, and also the second reason why I wanted to have an event that really spotlights hospice, said Greg Hutton, president and CEO of University of Rochester Medicine Home Care.
“People think of hospice as for dying, and it’s not. It’s for living your best as long as you can, and so hospice is here to celebrate life and not be anything related around death,” said Hutton.
Over 300 people registered to participate. Hutton said there were many supporters and volunteers at the event. The proceeds from the event will go towards the university’s home care hospice program.
