ROCHESTER — A local organization received more than $180,000 in state funding on Tuesday to study air quality in refugee housing.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation presented the grant to Rochester Refugee Resettlement Services on Lexington Avenue. The grant will pay for an air quality study of 100 local rental properties housing refugee and asylum-seeking families.
The study will monitor air quality in the homes’ kitchens and provide exhaust fans to homes that need them.
“New York state is continuing its commitment in investing in environmental justice communities and ensuring that our actions are not adding to the already disproportionate burdens that vulnerable communities experience daily,” DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton said.
This funding was part of a larger $6 million grant for environmental projects led by community-based organizations across the state.
