Rochester Amerks season ends with game three loss in first round of playoffs

TORONTO — The Rochester Amerks season is over after losing 4-2 in game three of the Calder Cup playoffs’ opening round on Sunday in Toronto.

The Amerks found themselves down 3-2 to the Toronto Marlies late, with a chance to tie and send the game to overtime. Instead, an empty-netter punched Toronto’s ticket to the Division Semifinals.

Rochester entered the playoffs as the fifth and final seed in the North Division, and on a five-game losing streak, clinching a postseason berth on the final day of the regular season. The Marlies took game one, 5-0, before Rochester handled them in game two, 4-0. In the decisive game three, Toronto went up in the first and never trailed despite a stellar 35-save performance from Devon Levi and a pair of goals from Konsta Helenius and Olivier Nadeau.

Rochester ended the regular season with 72 points in 72 games in Michael Leone’s second year at the helm. The Amerks force a game three in the series after losing game one 5-0 in Toronto but winning game two 4-0 at the Blue Cross Arena.
