ROCHESTER, N.Y. — All American Airlines flights were grounded this evening due to an IT outage.
News10NBC was at the Frederick Douglas Greater Rochester International Airport, where at least six departures were delayed and 13 arrivals were either delayed or fully cancelled. The grounding has since been lifted by the FAA, but it had a ripple effect on almost every airline, not just American Airlines.
Travelers say it was busy past security earlier this evening as people scrambled to find another way to get to their destinations or somewhere to sleep tonight. According to Flight Aware, American Airlines had more than 1,300 delays – the second most in the country – and 300 cancellations, also the second most.
Some were waiting for hours for their loved ones’ flights to arrive, while others say they’re now having to delay their travel plans for days due to the outage.
“Her plane was supposed to land at 6:15. They delayed it three different times,” said Bonnie, who was picking up her daughter. “And then when we got here, we got here thinking it was going to be here at 7:20, and then found out that it was going to be 7:55.”
“They tried to put me on another flight, delayed to go out an hour after I was supposed to depart at 8 p.m., and then that basically missed my connection,” traveler Jacquline Ebner said. “So the best I could do is get rebooked on another airline for tomorrow evening.”
There is no word on what caused the IT outage.
