RELIGION HEADLINES THR 10-22

(SRN NEWS)-

(  )  Two companies are settling religious discrimination claims involving Christian and Muslim employees.  The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission says the firms agreed to pay 130,000 dollars combined.  A Georgia supermarket fired a Christian employee for requesting Sundays off and a detective agency in North Carolina fired a Muslim employee after denying her request for time-off for a religious holiday.  Both companies have agreed to update their workplace religious accommodation policies.  President Trump has tasked his administration with rooting out religious discrimination in the workplace.
(  ) Myanmar’s military is accused of destroying two Christian churches in separate attacks this month.  Christian Solidarity Worldwide reports military jets bombed a Presbyterian church in Chin State October 9th, destroying the building without reported casualties.  Soldiers also reportedly burned down a Baptist church and surrounding homes in Kachin State October 12th.  CSW says the attacks violate international humanitarian law and reflect a pattern of targeting Christian communities. Myanmar’s military has faced accusations of religious persecution since seizing power in a 2021 coup.
(  )  Clergymen, pro-family advocates and mental health professionals are cheering the state government of Utah.  Officials there are suing prediction-market company Kalshi over wagers offered to residents.  The attorney general’s office filed the case this week, alleging that the platform amounts to illegal gambling and a public nuisance under state law.  Kalshi markets contracts tied to the outcomes of elections, sports and other events.  The lawsuit asks a court to stop the company from offering those contracts in Utah.  Critics say Kalshi’s model is specifically designed to get around state laws that bar gambling.
