ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The polls are now closed for the 2025 Election Day in New York State, and results are starting to come in.

News10NBC is tracking over 100 races in our region.

One of those races includes the race for Rochester Mayor. In June, incumbent Malik Evans came out on top in the Primary, beating out challengers Shashi Sinha and Mary Lupien.

As of 11 p.m. Tuesday, Evans is in the lead with 87% of the votes. Sabo has 13% of the votes. To see the most updated election results, click here.

Now, Conservative Louis Sabo is facing off against Evans in the General Election.

News10NBC Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean sat down with Evans at the coffee shop on Parcel 5 to talk about his vision for the future if he wins a second term.

“I think the number one thing will be looking at what we can do to expand economic opportunities for people in our city,” Evans said.

Evans expressed concern about the country’s safety net, highlighting issues with SNAP.

“Four years ago it was gun violence. That was our number one priority. It still will be a priority but when you look at the macro-economic environment and what’s happening here particularly where you see poor people being attacked, you see what’s going on with SNAP,” Evans said.

The city has seen a significant reduction in gun violence over the past four years. The average number of shootings per week dropped from eight to three, and homicides decreased from nearly two per week to one every two weeks.

“I said we would drive gun violence down. This year, if the numbers trend, over a four year period, we will see a 63% reduction in shootings from 2021 to 2025,” Evans said.

Berkeley Brean: “Finish this sentence. In four years Rochester will be?”

Malik Evans: “In four years, Rochester will be a hope-filled city with an exciting future.”

He also mentioned plans for a state park in the city, a new nature park, a civil rights park, and thousands of new housing units.

“In four years you’re going to have a state park in the middle of the city that’s never happened before. You’re going to have a nature park that we just cut the ribbon on. You’re going to have a civil rights park. Main and Clinton will be transformed. You will have thousands more new housing units,” Evans said.

News10NBC’s Lynette Adams also sat down with Sabo, where Sabo laid out his vision for Rochester in the next four years.

“I want to see it be the center- it is the center, but THE center of life,” said Sabo.

Sabo identified Rochester’s biggest challenge as affordability in a post-corporate job market. He says a business friendly mindset is part of the solution.
