Preparing for winter weather and what to expect during evening commute Tuesday

Yellow Alert Weather Day: Slick and snowy roads on East Avenue

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Snowfall throughout the day Tuesday has created wintry driving conditions, leading to increased activity at local auto shops.

A worker at East Ave Auto mentioned that it’s common for people to wait until it snows to install snow tires.

“That always happens where people come in the last minute with bald tires, or they just drove the car up here from another state where there’s no inspection rules and the cars from Florida, all the tires are bald,” said worker Paul Marone.

A driver who stopped at the shop for gas shared her concerns about the morning commute.

“I’m not thrilled. I do become a little bit nervous about the idea of having to ride in this kind of weather,” said Maia Nero.

Early morning Tuesday, News10NBC drove around in the First Alert Storm Patrol to check out the conditions and saw plenty of slippery spots, especially on bridges.

Marone advised that the best practice is to have your car equipped with good tires before it snows. He recommended that Thanksgiving is a good time to ensure car tires are ready for winter.

He also noted that many shops do not carry the correct tires for all types of vehicles, which can lead to availability issues and the need to order them.

The New York State Department of Transportation emphasized that winter is the most challenging driving season. They advised drivers to proceed slowly, even if their vehicle has good traction in ice and snow.
