NY school bus stop-arm cameras linked to fewer illegal passes, officials say at Henrietta meeting

HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Local school districts and safety partners gathered in Henrietta Wednesday to discuss Operation Safe Stop and the effectiveness of school bus stop-arm cameras.

Districts that have used stop-arm cameras reported a decline in drivers illegally passing school buses, but officials said illegal passing remains a serious concern.

“We currently average about 47 fatal crashes a year. Forty-seven lives lost. Forty-seven families impacted. That needs to be stopped,” said Richard Tantalo.

“No parent should ever have to receive the news that their child was hurt. Or worse isn’t coming home because a driver was impatient, distracted, or unwilling to stop,” Tantalo said.

The New York Association for Pupil Transportation estimated more than 50,000 drivers illegally pass stopped school buses each day statewide, prompting calls for continued enforcement and education.
