NEWARK, N.Y. — Newark Police have released the name of the man who drowned after falling into the Erie Canal on Saturday evening.
Police say John Fiander, 65, of Ontario, Canada, was on a boat with his significant other and two friends when he drowned. The group was sightseeing in the village when the man slipped into the water near Van Buren Street.
The woman on the boat was trying to find the man in the water. Police say the woman was reluctantly urged to get out of the water. Newark Fire sent a boat out to rescue the man, but it was too late.
Police say the drowning is still under investigation, but appears to be an accident.
