Nearly 16,000 tickets issued so far this year during statewide impaired driving crackdown

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Police have issued nearly 16,000 tickets so far this year as part of a statewide crackdown on drug or alcohol-impaired driving.

The New York State DMV and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee shared the latest numbers on Wednesday. The DMV says that state and local police agencies have stepped up their enforcement of impaired driving, especially during holidays like Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day. The crackdown will continue into the fall and winter holiday season.

Acting DMV Commissioner Christian Jackstadt spoke about the importance of making a plan to get home, rather than getting behind the wheel while impaired.

“If you’re celebrating and decide to drink, or consume cannabis or other drugs. Make sure that you have a plan to get yourself home safely. There is no excuse for choosing to get behind the wheel if you are impaired. You have so many better options available, like a DD or a rideshare,” Jackstadt said.

The campaign also includes public awareness outreach, a crackdown on fake IDs, and partnerships with groups like Mothers Against Drunk Driving. Last holiday season, Monroe County STOP-DWI and local police agencies participated in a campaign to crackdown on drunk driving.
