MEDINA, N.Y. — Two parents are facing charges after being accused of assaulting their 14-month-old child and lying about it.
Medina Police say they first got a complaint from Emily Niersberger, 24, and Christian Cooper, 28, on Sept. 5. The two told them a person came up to them on a walk and assaulted Cooper and their child.
During investigations, police say they noticed slight differences in Cooper and Niersberger’s descriptions of what happened. They say after investigating further, they learned the stated suspect wasn’t in New York at the time of the alleged assault.
Police say as more evidence was gathered, it became clear to them the explanation for the child’s injuries wasn’t true. They say they later learned Cooper hit the child himself, and Niersberger worked with Cooper to try and hide some of the details on how the child was hurt.
Niersberger was arrested on Oct. 16, and Cooper was arrested a couple of days later on Oct. 18. The two face the following charges:
Cooper
- Endangering the welfare of a child
- Assault in the second-degree
- Forgery
- Criminal contempt
- Making a false written statement
Niersberger
- Endangering the welfare of a child
- Forgery
- Making a false written statement
Both were brought to the Orleans County Jail.
According to police, the child was treated at Golisano Children’s Hospital in Buffalo for minor injuries. After being treated, police say the child was placed in a safe environment by Orleans County Child Protective Services during the investigation.
