‘Lux is our neighbor’; Boulder Coffee set to hold variety show to support Lux Lounge after fire

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Boulder Coffee on Alexander Street is getting ready to hold a variety show on Saturday night as a fundraiser for Lux Lounge, which remains closed nearly two weeks after a fire.

The fire broke out in the floor above the dive bar on South Avenue. No one was hurt, but smoke and water damaged the first floor that houses the bar. Keith Rose, the owner of Boulder Coffee, said it’s sad any time a fire damages a business, especially a fellow business in the South Wedge neighborhood.

“It makes you immediately think it could happen to you, especially because we have an upstairs above us. We have multiple floors,” he said. “…Lux is our neighbor, quite literally. We have one of their staff members that lives in an apartment above us. It’s just scary to think about, but glad everyone was safe.”

Rose said Lux was one of the first bars he went to when he moved to Rochester. He said many of the staff and regular customers at Boulder Coffee also go to Lux.

Saturday night’s show will feature live music, comedy, burlesque, and drag. There will also be raffles. Doors open around 8:15 p.m., and the show begins at 9 p.m. You can learn more on Boulder Coffee Facebook page. All proceeds from the ticket sales and bar sales will go to a GoFundMe to support Lux’s recovery from the fire.

The art troupe Breaking the Binary was able to find 30 performers in a week to make the fundraiser possible. Last Friday, there was also a fundraiser at Jack’s Extra Fancy on Atlantic Avenue to support Lux. Rose said it’s great to see how many businesses in the community are stepping up.

“If it’s not other people helping, then who will? It’s just kind of overwhelming to see the support from people who reached out to us and reached out to Breaking the Binary,” Rose said.
