ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Two local healthcare workers are making a global impact by helping patients with cystic fibrosis in Croatia.
Vehid Basic and Donna Germuga, both employed at UR Medicine’s Highland Hospital, have been collecting used medical devices no longer needed by their owners and shipping them overseas.
“It’s amazing. It’s really great to be able to help people. Otherwise these things would wind up in a landfill. It’s win win win, right?” Germuga said.
The equipment helps patients manage symptoms and improve their quality of life, often transforming it. These donations have provided hope and relief for people who otherwise lack access to this essential care. Germuga said she plans to drop off another device today to send to a family in need.
