First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert for Tuesday through Friday for extreme heat, high humidity, and thunderstorms

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The News10NBC First Alert Weather Team is tracking this week’s heat event and storm threat with a four-day Yellow Alert in effect from Tuesday through Friday. The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for all western New York counties from noon to 8 pm on Tuesday. Then, an Extreme Heat Watch is in effect starting Wednesday afternoon, lasting through Friday evening. Along with the excessive heat and humidity, also comes the opportunity for isolated to scattered thunderstorms. A warm, humid atmosphere can quickly turn a thunderstorm volatile. Thunder chances stay through the entirety of this week.

Through Monday night, skies will stay mostly cloudy out ahead of the incoming warm front with temperatures dropping to near 70 degrees. Before the warm front arrives, dew points will stay in the upper-50s to low-60s. However, after midnight, humidity will increase through Tuesday morning. We are tracking a cluster of storms that may materialize in the morning hours of Tuesday. Though model data is inconsistent with the timing of these storms, the atmosphere will be primed with both heat (storm fuel) and humidity (moisture) that may allow for storms to quickly become strong. The main threats associated with these storms will be the potential for gusty winds, downpours, and hail. A smaller threat for an isolated tornado also exists, but remains lower on the impact list.

Though data has been inconsistent with the timing of these thunderstorms, the heat and humidity data has been consistent. If a thunderstorm does materialize, it may appear quickly and bring gusty downpours and hail. Due to the ambiguity of the timing of these storms, it is important to keep an eye on radar and keep your First Alert weather app handy for hour-by-hour updates from our weather team.

Tuesday’s high temperatures are expected to reach 90 degrees with heat index values near 100. and tropical-like humidity. Wednesday’s high temperatures are set to beat Tuesday’s high and heat index values between 105 and 110 degrees will be possible both Wednesday and Thursday. Friday, the heat and humidity may start to ease, but not by much. We are also tracking our next storm system that could bring showers and storms for the Fourth of July weekend. This is still a handful of days out, so we will keep you updated as we head closer to the holiday weekend.
