ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Governor Kathy Hochul says 396 million free school meals have been served to children across New York State under the Universal School Meals Program.
The program, launched nearly a year ago, offers free breakfast and lunch to all students in participating schools. Hochul says the initiative has also helped families save $450 million dollars in grocery costs statewide.
Hochul first introduced the idea at a school in Westbury, Long Island, in January 2025.
For the 2026-27 Fiscal Year, the enacted budget included $395 million for school meals.
