Family and friends honor man killed at Wegmans warehouse with balloon release vigil

GATES, N.Y. – Family and friends gathered to remember J’mere Ridley-Smith, who was shot and killed one week ago while working at the Wegmans warehouse in Gates. Police said Ridley-Smith was killed by his co-worker last Saturday.

A vigil and balloon release took place in his honor in the Corn Hill neighborhood. Hundreds of balloons filled the sky as attendees wore custom T-shirts featuring Ridley-Smith’s picture.

“It was hard for me trying to plan this, cause I would talk to him every day, and like, it just don’t seem right,” said Ridley-Smith’s mother, Jamala. “I shouldn’t be doing this for you; You should be doing this for me. It’s just been hard, it’s just to the point where I’m just numb, I’m walking through a fog every day.”

Kyshonn Green, the man accused of killing Ridley-Smith, was caught in Tennessee with a loaded gun. Video from his arraignment earlier this week in Knoxville showed Green, who is being extradited to New York to face a murder charge.
