Eastview Mall in Victor reopens after bomb threat called in to Michigan 911 center, Ontario County Sheriff says

VICTOR, N.Y. — Eastview Mall reopened Tuesday after deputies say it closed Monday following a bomb threat.

News10NBC’s Declan Stablow spoke with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office to learn where that threat might have come from. Deputies say the bomb threat was called in to a 911 center in Muskegon, Michigan. That center alerted the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff David Cirencione says he doesn’t know why it was called in states away.

“It’s fairly uncommon, primarily where the calls are placed as to the place that’s receiving the threat for somebody to call a 911 center half a dozen states west of here and make that call for Victor, New York is very unusual,” Cirencione said.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office still doesn’t know where that call made to Michigan actually came from but says the number wasn’t purchased in New York. The caller told the 911 center in Michigan they placed several bombs at Eastview Mall.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office made sure to get everyone out safely without panic.

“I think the added presence and when you see police officers and security walking through and actually in the middle of this and remaining calm, I think that lets people know that we’ve got the situation under control,” Cirencione said.

Once the mall was empty, Cirencione says the search took about an hour and a half.

“Well we have people actually evacuating the campus. The canines are doing their search. We have other we had other deputies and investigators and security that were actually checking the footage of these cameras,” Cirencione said.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office didn’t find anything suspicious and says shoppers don’t need to worry. The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is still investigating who made the call and where it came from. That caller could face several charges, including making a terroristic threat and falsely reporting an incident.

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office says it will have some extra deputies at the mall Tuesday to ensure the public feels safe. Anyone with information is asked to reach out to the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office.
