PERINTON, N.Y. — Monroe County sheriff’s deputies say a robbery led up to the deadly shooting of a man inside his apartment on Pittsford Palmyra Road in Perinton last month.

The sheriff’s office held a news conference on Wednesday, the day after announcing two more arrests in the murder. In total, three people are accused of killing Ezra John Nunez, 32, in the early morning of May 27.

That evening, police arrested Tyree Ross-Simmons in downtown Rochester and charged him with second-degree murder. Around two weeks later, deputies also arrested Destiny Cotto, 27, and Ja’Quez Riley-Hill, 20. Both are charged with second-degree murder and robbery. Investigators say all three played a role, and at least one person was “untruthful” in initial statements to police.

“All three individuals arrested for this played a significant role in the death of the victim. We believe robbery to be the motive,” said a leader of the sheriff’s office’s Criminal Investigations Section.

According to the sheriff’s office, Ross-Simmons was convicted of five felonies in Virginia back in 2020 for drugs and weapons. In addition, he was convicted of criminal possession of a weapon back in 2014 after RPD arrested him. He was also charged with DWI in Georgia.
