PALMYRA, N.Y. — A child, 11, was flown to the hospital with severe burns after a house fire on Sunday in Palmyra.
The fire broke out on Rolfe Street, in a neighborhood off Canandaigua Road, just before 9:20 p.m. Wayne County sheriff’s deputies say two other children, 8 and 14, were also taken to Strong Memorial Hospital for smoke inhalation.
At least nine fire departments responded to the burning home, originally for reports of a child trapped inside. Palmyra Fire Chief Lucas Shulla says all three children and the parents were able to escape before crews arrived.
Firefighters battled the flames from the inside. It took them about an hour to get the flames under control. Chief Shulla spoke about the moment his crew learned that everyone made it out of the home.
“Everyone had in the back of their mind when they got on scene that we’ll be going in fighting our hardest to try to get in there and knock the flames down to get the people out,” Shulla said. “It was a very, very big relief. Luckily, no one was injured besides that one child.”
The Red Cross is helping the people living at the home find a place to stay. News10NBC is working to get an update on the 11-year-old’s condition.
The departments that responded include the Village of Palmyra, East Palmyra, South Macedon, Fairville, Lincoln, Marion, Newark, Port Gibson, and Manchester. The Palmyra and Macedon police departments, along with New York State troopers and Wayne County deputies, were also among the first responders.
