ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Gas prices have hit a new high for the year as the war with Iran continues.
According to AAA, gas prices for regular gas have climbed to a national average of $4.229 per gallon. The spike comes as oil prices have surged higher since the U.S. and Iran remain at a standstill over reopening the Strait of Hormuz. In Monroe County specifically, regular gas per gallon comes out to $4.225. In New York State, the average for regular gas is $4.240 per gallon.
Experts warn the timing couldn’t be worse with the summer travel season just weeks away.
“Americans are probably re-evaluating their summer travel plans, which could actually further drive gasoline prices up,” said Patrick De Haan, head of Petroleum Analysis.
Out west, drivers are seeing the highest overall prices. In California, the cost of gas is nearly $6 a gallon.

Tips on getting the cheapest gas prices
In addition to checking GasBuddy’s fuel finder, News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry has some tips to improve fuel efficiency or find the lowest price:
- Keep your gas tank at least half full. This way, you have time to choose the cheapest gas station instead of what’s closest.
- Drive smoothly, as hard braking and acceleration can reduce fuel economy.
- Buy top-tier gas for better engine performance and fuel efficiency.
- Regularly check tire pressure, as low pressure can affect fuel efficiency.
- Use gas apps to find the cheapest gas nearby.
