(SRN NEWS)- Virginia State Senator L. Louise Lucas has been arrested by federal authorities in a case involving alleged drug trafficking, fraud, money laundering and firearms offenses, according to Fox News.
Lucas, the Senate’s president pro tempore, faces five charges, including racketeering conspiracy, marijuana distribution conspiracy, money-laundering conspiracy, honest-services fraud conspiracy and maintaining a drug-involved property.
The indictment alleges an illegal marijuana enterprise used Lucas’s political influence to advance legislation and regulations and secure recreational marijuana licenses for associates. It quotes Lucas telling an unindicted co-conspirator, “This is our last chance at generational wealth.”
At a Thursday news conference, FBI Director Kash Patel said the enterprise generated five million dollars in alleged proceeds.
Lucas has denied wrongdoing, calling the indictment an abuse of federal power and saying she would not be intimidated. Several other people, including members of her family, are also named in the case and face various charges.
The allegations have not been proven in court.
