ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Rochester teenager’s final act of generosity has touched the hearts of many.
Sixteen-year-old Cahry Christopher Gibson, a sophomore at Edison Tech, was taken off life support last Friday after suffering a brain injury in October.
His father, Christopher Gibson, made the difficult decision to take Cahry off the ventilator.
“They explained to me your son is probably going to be in this state for the rest of his life, Mr. Gibson. You’re going to have to decide to get him off the ventilator, give him a trach tube, and take him home as is, or you are going to have to decide and take the tube out and let him go,” said Christopher Gibson.
Cahry’s honor walk, a tribute video, has gone viral, showing him being taken away surrounded by family, friends, and hospital staff.
Christopher said his son was on a ventilator for about a month with no signs of progression after suffering a traumatic brain injury. The cause of the injury is still under investigation by police.
“I wanted my son. I had two sons, now I only have one. And that was my baby boy, my baby boy, man,” said Christopher Gibson.
Cahry’s friends and schoolmates held a balloon release to remember him. He was known for his love of basketball and fishing with his dad and older brother. Christopher said donating Cahry’s organs was a way to leave a legacy.
“I chose that for him so he can have a legacy left behind. He didn’t even get to graduate high school,” said Christopher Gibson.
Cahry’s story has resonated with many, as the tribute video has garnered more than 200,000 views. Christopher said he shared the video for his family in Louisiana and Texas, not expecting it to reach so many.
“I couldn’t be more proud of my son,” said Christopher Gibson.
Rochester Police tell us they are investigating the circumstances that led to Cahry’s death. This is a developing story stay with us for updates
