24th District: Alissa Ellman secures Democratic nomination, will face Rep. Tenney

FINGER LAKES — Alissa Ellman, a veteran and former Department of Veterans Affairs employee, has secured the Democratic nomination to challenge Rep. Claudia Tenney for the 24th Congressional District.

Ellman secured 62% of the vote against challenger Dianna Kastenbaum, the former CEO of a tool-and-die casting company, who secured 38%. On her campaign website, Ellman said she decided to run after the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency cut her job in Veterans Affairs. After that, the Houghton native became involved in organizing town halls. See election results across the region here.

Rep. Tenney has served in the 24th District, which includes the Finger Lakes region, since 2021. The Republican also served from 2017 to 2019, losing the House seat but reclaiming it in the 2020 election.

Tenney will face Ellman in the Nov. 3 general election. This fall, all 435 U.S. House seats are up for grabs. Currently, Republicans have a majority, with 218 seats compared to 212 seats for Democrats.
