Who killed Tammy Jo? Sheriff seeks help finding killer of 16-year-old girl in 1979

CALEDONIA, N.Y. — Tammy Jo Alexander was murdered Nov. 9, 1979 and left in a cornfield in Caledonia, Livingston County, one week after her 16th birthday. It’s a cold case that the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office has continued to investigate over 46 years.

According to Sheriff Thomas Dougherty, thousands of leads have been generated over the decades but none have led to the identity of her killer. The Sheriff’s Office is asking the community to provide any information that could lead to finding the person responsible.

“It is not too late to provide her family with closure, as other similar cases have been solved in the course of this investigation,” Dougherty stated in a release.

Tammy Jo — who would have turned 62 on Nov. 2 — was killed on Route 20, about one-half mile southwest of Route 5. She had been shot in the head and back and left for dead, to be found by the farmer who owned the field. It would be decades before the teen would be identified.

She was wearing tan corduroys, a multi-colored plaid polyester shift, blue socks, brown ripple sole shoes, and a red nylon lined windbreaker (made by Auto Sports Inc.) with black stripes down the arms. (Anyone familiar with Auto Sports Inc. is asked to contact the Sheriff’s Office immediately.) She also was wearing a silver necklace with three small turquoise stones and two key chains: a heart and a key to the heart.

Additional information is available from the Sheriff’s Office upon request.

If you have information, contact the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office at 4 Court St., Geneseo, NY, 14454 or at (585) 243-7100. You may email Investigator James Merrick at JamesMerrick@livingstoncountyny.gov.
