‘What the hell is that?’: Webster police now investigating mysterious explosions and flashes of light caught on camera

WEBSTER, N.Y. — The mysterious explosions in Webster are back, and police now say they have an active investigation.

Flashes of light and explosions were captured late Saturday night. Since then, other neighbors in Webster said they heard different booms this week.

Chief Investigative Reporter Berkeley Brean has documented the explosions since Thanksgiving. But for the first time now, Webster police told him they have an active investigation.

“This is the neighborhood where the latest explosions were recorded and the flash of light appears to come from the north,” Brean said. “And we’re about two miles from Lake Ontario.”

Paul Morrell was asleep Saturday night when he heard a loud boom.

“‘Boom!’ I immediately jumped out and ducked my head down and thought ‘what the hell is that?’” Morrell said.

It was an explosion. Actually two of them back to back — a flash of light and then the sound.

“And the sound in those videos don’t even capture it. I mean it is a very boom, like a flash bang. Boom!” Morrell said.

Brean started tracking these explosions in the fall. Joell Calcagno’s cameras caught them in October.

“It sounds like something exploding,” Calcagno said.

Webster neighbors caught them again in December. Bryan Hensel captured explosion sounds with a flash of light.

“It didn’t sound like lightning. It didn’t sound like fireworks. It was significant,” Hensel said.

North of the neighborhood that recorded the explosions are open farm fields. Brean was standing about three miles from the neighborhood at Webster Park.

Last year, Webster said it looked into the explosions and found no evidence. Now the police consider the latest explosions an active investigation.

“The sound just opens you right up. Jostles you right away,” Morrell said.

The town of Webster and the police said this is an active investigation but that is all the information they’re prepared to release right now.
