WEBSTER, N.Y. — Two Webster Police officers were brought to the hospital after the chief of police says a man threw a lit can of gasoline at them.
Chief Dennis Kohlmeier says just before 7 p.m. Tuesday, his officers responded to Summitville Drive for a disturbance, with the caller later reporting there was gas in his apartment.
Responding officers smelled a strong odor of gas coming from the apartment and told the man to leave, Kohlmeier says.
When the man didn’t leave, Kohlmeier says the officers forced their way into the apartment and found the man had lit a gas can. As the officers approached the man, Kohlmeier says the man threw the lit gas can at the officers, which started a fire inside the apartment.
The officers were able to get the man out and start clearing other people from the area and attached apartments. Webster and West Webster Fire Departments responded and extinguished the fire. Kohlmeier says the fire was contained to the single unit.
According to Kohlmeier, the man was brought to Rochester General Hospital and admitted with minor injuries. He added that two of his officers were brought to Strong Memorial Hospital, one with a minor burn and both for smoke exposure. Both were treated and released a short time later.
The Red Cross also responded and helped several people who were temporarily displaced.
Kohlmeier says the department is working with the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office. Check back later for any updates as News10NBC learns more.
