ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Roman Catholic Diocese of Rochester is getting a new bishop to lead the organization.
Pope Leo XIV officially accepted the resignation of the Most Reverend Bishop Salvatore Matano on Wednesday morning, the diocese confirmed. Diocese rules say that the bishops must submit their retirement or resignation papers the day they turn 75. Then, it’s up to the pope to accept the resignation.
The pope has appointed The Most Reverend John Bonnici as the new Bishop of Rochester. The diocese will hold a news conference at 10:45 a.m. with more details. We will livestream the news conference in this story. Both Salvatore and Bonnici are expected to be at the conference.
Matano has served as the Bishop of Rochester since 2014, serving as the Bishop of Burlington, Vermont, before then. He was born in Providence, Rhode Island and was ordained into priesthood in 1971. He’s Rochester’s ninth bishop.
Bonnici currently serves as a pastor for SS. John & Paul/St. Augustine in New York City, according to the Archdiocese of New York website. He was born in New York City and was ordained in 1991.
