ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Residents of University Tower in Rochester have reported ongoing issues with pests such as mice, rats, bedbugs, and roaches in their apartments. Despite multiple complaints to management, they said the problems have persisted.
Maria Rios, a resident of University Tower for two years, said she has noticed a significant increase in pest sightings in recent months. “We’re visibly able to see them shooting across the room with the light on the TV on, that seems to be a problem,” Rios said. She mentioned catching three mice in glue traps in her apartment.
Rios expressed frustration with the management’s response to the pest issue. “When we explain it to them, it’s either take a photo. I mean, there’s no way most of us can chase around a rat or a mouse to take a photo of it,” she said. Rios added that pest control was seen at the complex a couple of months ago.
Courtney Baker-Brown, who has lived in University Tower since June, also reported seeing evidence of an infestation. “About a week ago, I heard Maria yelling, and I went in the hallway and checked, [and] there was bedbugs on the elevator floor.”
“We have dogs. So taking the dogs out on the elevator, are they going to get bit? Are [the dogs] going to go back with [bed bugs], are they going to end up bringing it into the house?”
News10NBC spoke with at least two other residents who supported Rios’ and Baker-Brown’s claims but did not want to appear on camera.
The Rochester Housing Authority, the building owner, responded to inquiries with the following statement.
“The Rochester Housing Authority treats all maintenance concerns, including pest-related reports, with urgency and care. RHA leadership is actively reviewing this report to ensure appropriate actions have been taken and the matters resolved. Residents are encouraged to submit maintenance requests so issues can be tracked and addressed promptly. On-site maintenance staff review and respond to requests on a regular basis, often sooner than the standard weekly schedule.”
