Several local entities, including the City of Rochester, Monroe County Sheriff, University of Rochester, West Irondequoit schools, Greece schools, the towns of Henrietta, Greece, Victor, and even New York State are on the unclaimed funds list.

Then there are nonprofits like the Gates Keystone Police Pipe and Drum Band is also on the list.

“Well I just found out before I got down here that our treasurer is researching what we need to file a claim,” Bill Gilchrist, president of the band, said.

Berkeley Brean: “Any idea what this might be?”

Gilchrist: “It could be a check, it’s from Wegmans, correct? It could be an appearance check that somehow got lost in the mail. I honestly don’t know.”

Kelly Kuracina, director of the Office of Unclaimed Funds, explained the complexities of public entity listings.

“It’s not uncommon that municipalities have unclaimed funds reported to them,” Kuracina said. She added, “So even though the village or town might be reported as the owner because they were the payee, they may not be the ones entitled to claim it.”

Kuracina confirmed that cities, towns, and school districts regularly search for unclaimed funds. “They do,” she said.

Gilchrist expressed gratitude for the information, saying the money will be used for new equipment or kilts.

“And thank you for letting us know about this because we haven’t been checking it and it sounds to me like other people aren’t,” said Gilchrist.

Other notable entities on the list include the Buffalo Bills, Rochester Americans, a bank from Iran, and the Republic of Venezuela. The Buffalo Bills and Rochester Americans simply need to file a claim to retrieve their funds.

According to the comptroller’s office website, $12 million has already been returned since Jan. 1. To see if there is unclaimed money in your name, click here.
