ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Residents of Park Square Apartments in Rochester have been dealing with a significant trash problem. News10NBC received a call about the trash backup and found garbage piled high, clogging the garbage chute.
Jacquelyn Holley, a resident of 14 years who is legally blind and uses a walker, said the situation has been going on for months. “This morning I couldn’t get down the hallway because the garbage was sitting out,” Holley said. “I couldn’t fit down there with my walker, or I didn’t see it all because of my vision. So I had to move that out of the way myself. Disgusting.”
On a scale of 1 to 10, Holley described the stench as a 12; explaining that while the trash is cleaned up every few weeks, it accumulates quickly in the 17 story building. “[The garbage] hasn’t been emptied in a week,” Holley said, adding she’s tried multiple times to contact the front office regarding the issue, but has been unsuccessful.
Neighbor Karen Freeman expressed similar concerns. “In the bathroom, it smells horrendous…I have to use the other sink to brush my teeth because you turn on the water, it makes you gag,” Freeman said.
Conifer Realty, the building owner, said they would review their staffing. They attributed the pileup to their maintenance lead being unexpectedly out and claimed the trash was cleared.
However, as of 9:30 p.m. on Monday, Holley reported that the piles remained.
Conifer says the chutes and common areas will be cleaned by Tuesday.
Trash pileups have been reported at other Conifer Realty properties. A viewer photo from October shows another trash pile at the dumpster of 200 East Ave.
Park Square tenants are planning a community meeting on the issue, among others, this Thursday.
