Times Union: Advocates call for governor to sign ‘Kyra’s Law’ after death of 4 kids near Albany

ALBANY, N.Y. — A bill aimed at making child safety the top priority in New York custody cases, is awaiting Governor Kathy Hochul’s signature.

Kyra’s Law passed the legislature unanimously. It would require family court judges to closely review evidence of domestic violence, child abuse and other safety risks before making custody or visitation decisions.

According to the Albany Times Union, supporters say recent tragedies, like the six deaths, including 4 children, in Mechanicville last week, underscore the need for stronger protections.

The bill was first introduced in 2021. The law is named after Jacqueline Franchetti’s 9-month-old daughter Kyra who was murdered in July 2016.
