ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A suspect has been shot and killed by Rochester Police in the 19th Ward on Thursday night.
The shooting took place shortly after 7:30 p.m. Investigators say they were called to the area for a suspicious man looking into and breaking into cars. Witnesses say they heard officers telling the man to drop the gun. Officers shot the suspect, an adult man believed to be in his 30s, on Ernestine Street.
“Despite immediate life-saving efforts by the officers involved, the ambulance, fire department — that man has been declared deceased here at the scene,” Capt. Greg Bello said.
A handgun was found next to the suspect, police said.
“We’re in the preliminary stages, but I can say also the male had a gun which was located on the ground next to him. We’re working our way through. We haven’t reviewed the body-worn camera footage yet, so we’re working our way through. We still need to look at the body camera footage, working our technicians or detectives,” Bello said. He added that they are looking for any additional witnesses who has any information on what happened.
There remains a heavy police and emergency presence in the 19th Ward.
