ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Some New Yorkers are still waiting for their “inflation refund” checks from the state. While the majority have gotten theirs, a few are experiencing delays.
The state says more than 8.2 million checks have been mailed, with the last mass mailing in November.
Kara Palermo initially thought her check was in the last batch. However, when November passed without receiving it, she contacted the state’s taxation and finance department.
“I waited, a couple days into December, still nothing so I ended up calling the taxation and finance department and listened to the recording about the inflation checks and you can’t speak to anyone,” Palermo said.
Palermo hung up frustrated but called back and navigated through the prompts.
“I clicked the prompt to receive a call back and someone did call me back within like a half-hour,” she said.
The representative first confirmed her eligibility for the check. To qualify, individuals must have filed a 2023 tax return and not been listed as a dependent. Income requirements include earning less than $300,000 as a married couple or $150,000 as a single filer.
Palermo confirmed her eligibility.
“We are eligible, nothing has changed, we hadn’t moved so she says okay can you read me a couple of lines off your tax return from 2023,” she said. “So read her the lines she needed and she was able to find us, she said oh I see your check has been sent back to us for some reason, couldn’t tell me why but said, we’ll get it right back out to you.”
For those still waiting, it’s crucial to contact someone to check for delivery issues.
“You’re kind waiting and everyone else is getting it, it’s just like.. now you gotta do extra work to try and get the money when it’s just supposed to show up,” Palermo said.
If you think you are entitled to the refund, call the State Department of Taxation and Finance at 518-457-5181. It is recommended to have the 2023 tax return handy for troubleshooting.
